Grade(s):
- 5
Subject(s):
Recommended Technology:
Internet and Smartboard
Other Instructional Materials or Notes:
Teachers can add more text features or replace ones from the list if needed to adjust the level of difficulty.
Lesson Progression
Begin by separating students into four or five groups.
Give each group a nonfiction book or two, and also give them sticky notes.
Give them five minutes to label whatever they would like to in the book using the sticky notes.
Next, give them the list of text features and give them 10 minutes to label the ones they know using the sticky notes.
Walk around the room and take anecdotal notes of students work.
After 10 minutes play the Kahoot game (This will require smart board and Internet).
Give students 5 minutes after the game to correct their answers (sticky notes).
End by letting each group show the class where they put the sticky notes in their book/books.
Teacher Notes
This could be used for a literary text lesson as well as the informational text needed. By giving students a chance to label the books with the sticky notes with little to no knowledge of what to look for they are formulating their own questions. This allows students to gain interest in the topic. Adding the list gives them a chance to make more educated guesses about what to label in the nonfiction books, and then the Kahoot should clear up most of their questions and bring them to the point of the lesson.
Text Features List
These are just a few text features. You can add other ones such as diagrams, maps, etc. if you would like to make it more challenging for some students.
