Lesson Progression

  1. Prior to the lesson, gather images of neighborhoods and schools in various countries from around the world.
  2. Provide images of students’ neighborhood and school at each learning club. Tell students that they will be a great detective and find things that are alike with their neighborhood and school and other neighborhoods and schools from around the world, and find things that are different. The first thing they would need to do as a detective is to “analyze” or study the pictures closely to tell the similarities and differences.
  3. Give student groups a detective magnifier (creates play and novelty to the lesson)  and a small notepad to jot down their findings.
  4. Tell students they will work with a partner to find out what is like and what is not alike. They will compare and contrast the two different places.
  5. Give students 10-15 minutes to analyze the images at their tables.
  6. Pull the group back together and discuss findings.
  7. Closure: ask students why is it important to know how to compare and contrast? Ask why is it important to know what other neighborhoods and schools look like?

Teacher Notes
