Locomotor Movements
Objectives:
- TSWBT identify a locomotor movement and its cues and use the correct technique to perform each locomotor movement.
- TSWBT observe another student performing a locomotor movement and identify which cues they are performing well, and which cues they need to improve on
Equipment:
- Locomotor movement cards
- Hula hoops
- Gym space/outdoor space
What to do:
The teacher will scatter hula hoops spacing them out throughout the gym floor and place 8 locomotor movement cards inside the hoop upside down (face down). Once the equipment is set up the teacher will assign each student a partner that they will be working with throughout the class. Teammates will find a personal space near a hula hoop.
When the teacher blows the whistle or says go, Teammate A will pick up one of the locomotor movement cards from the hula hoop and review the cues. Once they review the cues, they will hand the card to Teammate B. Teammate A will perform the locomotor movement near their hula hoop for 1 minute while Teammate B watches their performance looking for the cues listed on the movement card. After the movement is performed, Teammate B will talk with Teammate A about the cues they performed well and the cues they think need improvement. Once the discussion is complete, Teammate B places the locomotor movement card “right side up” in the hula hoop.
On the next whistle, Teammate B will pick up one of the locomotor movement cards and review the cues; then, hand the card to Teammate A. Observations and analysis will continue; and, the locomotor movement card is placed right side up in the hoop. Teammates will continue this routine until all of the cards are facing “right side up”!
