Let’s Go Careers Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

1. Bellringer - Students will brainstorm either individually or as partners what skills and knowledge Emergency Medical Services workers need to become successful. The teacher will have the students write their responses on the document, “Emergency Medical Services Brainstorming Activity.” (found in the resources tab). This can be done digitally, printed, or whole-group and writing their responses on large chart paper. The students will share their answers by both submitting their responses digitally and orally. The students need to justify their answers when sharing aloud. 
2. The teacher will introduce the lesson by reviewing the essential question and have the students begin thinking about the role of EMTs and Paramedics.
3. The teacher will introduce the next activity by reading the overview of the video,  “Bobby Wampler, EMS Region Commander | Let's Go! CAREERS” found  https://www.knowitall.org/video/bobby-wampler-ems-region-commander-lets-go-careers. The teacher will share the document, “Bobby Wampler, EMS Region Commander Learning Activity” (located in the Resources tab) with the students (this can be done digitally or printed). The teacher will review the activity so the students know what to expect when watching the video. The students will complete that activity and submit to the teacher. The teacher will use “Bobby Wampler, EMS Region Commander Learning Activity Answer Key” (located in the Resources Tab) to check for understanding and provide feedback to the students. The teacher should discuss the answers and video with the class (the discussion should relate back to the essential question).
4. The teacher will introduce the next activity by telling the students that this will focus on the skills and requirements of becoming an EMT and paramedic. The teacher will share the document, “Lisa Dawkins, Paramedic Student Video Learning Activity” (located in the Resources tab) with the students (this can be done digitally or printed). The teacher will review the activity so the students know what to expect when watching the video. The students will watch the video Lisa Dawkins, Paramedic Student | Let's Go! CAREERS - https://www.knowitall.org/video/lisa-dawkins-paramedic-student-lets-go-careers and complete the activity. The teacher will review the students’ responses using the document “Lisa Dawkins, Paramedic Student Video Learning Activity Answer Key” (located in the Resources tab) to check for understanding. The teacher will review the correct answers with the students to lead to a discussion focusing back on the essential question. 
5. The teacher will introduce the next activity by telling the students the next activity will be on paramedic tools.  The teacher will share the document, “Lexington County EMS 360 Video Activity” (located in the Resources tab) with the students (this can be done digitally or printed). The teacher will review the activity so the students know what to expect when watching the video. The students will watch Lexington County EMS 360 | Let's Go! CAREERS - https://www.knowitall.org/video/lexington-county-ems-360-lets-go-careers and complete the activity.  The teacher will review the students’ responses using the document “Lexington County EMS 360 Video Activity Answer Key” (located in the Resources tab) to check for understanding. 
6. Culminating Activity - Students will research the steps and requirements one must complete in order to become an EMT or Paramedic. The students will then create a presentation or essay detailing the proper procedures of becoming a licensed EMT or Paramedic.  The presentation must include accurate and correct information from reputable sources.  The students can create this presentation using digital software as PowerPoint or Google Slides depending on your school’s digital software. Share the document, “How to Become an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Presentation,” (located in the Assessment tab) with the class digitally, if possible (if not, you can print out this document and distribute it manually), so the students know their expectations. The teacher needs to use the document, “How to Become an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Presentation Teacher’s Edition” (located in the Assessment tab) to assess the students’ presentations and provide feedback.

If you are using a cloud file storage system (Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or iCloud), I would recommend having the students create a digital folder for this lesson to save their notes and student work. It will help with organization.
