Home for the Holidays: Navigating with Angles

This lesson helps 7th graders apply their knowledge of angle relationships (supplementary, complementary, vertical, adjacent) to real-world travel scenarios. They'll write and solve equations to find unknown angles, imagining themselves navigating roads and flight paths during the holiday season.

Lesson Progression

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

Holiday Travel: Begin by discussing holiday travel. Ask students how people travel during the holidays (planes, trains, cars). Show images of different modes of transportation and routes.
Angles in Travel: Point out that travel routes often involve intersecting lines, creating different types of angles. Discuss how understanding angle relationships might be important for navigation and planning routes.
Angle Review: Quickly review the definitions of:
Supplementary Angles: Two angles that add up to 180 degrees.
Complementary Angles: Two angles that add up to 90 degrees.
Vertical Angles: Angles opposite each other when two lines intersect (they are congruent).   
Adjacent Angles: Angles that share a common vertex and side.

2.  Exploring Angle Relationships (15 minutes)

Visual Aids: Use diagrams or real-world images (intersecting roads, flight paths) to illustrate each angle relationship.
Equation Practice: Provide examples of finding unknown angles using equations:
Example 1 (Supplementary): Two streets intersect. One angle measures 110 degrees. What is the measure of the supplementary angle? (x + 110 = 180, x = 70)
Example 2 (Complementary): A plane makes a turn. The original flight path and the new path form a 90-degree angle. If one angle is 45 degrees, what is the measure of the other angle? (x + 45 = 90, x = 45)
Example 3 (Vertical): Two roads cross, forming two pairs of vertical angles. If one angle measures 60 degrees, what is the measure of the vertical angle? (x = 60)

3.  Real-World Travel Problems (20 minutes)

Give each student their copy of the performance task linked in the resources tab. 

Scenario Examples: Present real-world travel scenarios involving angle relationships.
Scenario 1: Two highways intersect. A car travels on one highway, then turns onto the other highway. The angle between the two highways is 125 degrees. What is the measure of the angle the car turns through? (Supplementary angles)
Scenario 2: A plane is flying due north, then makes a 30-degree turn to the northeast. What is the measure of the angle between the plane's original path and its new path? (Complementary angles)
Scenario 3: A train track intersects another track. If one of the angles formed is 75 degrees, what are the measures of the other three angles? (Vertical and supplementary angles)
Solving and Discussion: Have students work individually or in pairs to solve the scenarios, write equations, and explain their reasoning.

4.  Mapping Your Trip (10 minutes)

Map Activity: Provide a simple map with intersecting roads or flight paths.
Angle Challenge: Have students identify and label different types of angles on the map. Then, give them angle measures for some of the angles and have them use equations to find the measures of the unknown angles.

5. Wrap-up (5 minutes)

Reflection: Discuss how understanding angle relationships can be helpful in real-world situations, especially in navigation and planning travel routes.
