Lesson Progression

Day 1:

  • Read the story “The Day You Begin”
  • Ask students what they learned from the story.
  • Allow for conversations to go towards how members of the class are similar and unique.
  • Break students into partnerships.
  • Allow students to fill out a Venn diagram showing similarities and differences between members of the group.
  • The students will share this information with the class as a “get to know you activity.”

Day 2:

  • Students will be given the task to write a narrative piece on who they are as a student, learner, human, or friend.
  • They should try their best on the writing and discuss events or times that allowed them to become who they are today.

Days 3-4

  • Allow students to continue writing.
  • Confer with students about their writing. (this activity allows you to see their writing abilities as well as learn about them as people).

Day 5

  • Allow students to create the “I Am” board.
  • This can be a bulletin board, on a wall, or any space in the classroom.
  • Students will be given pieces of paper where they can write who they are. (ex. I am athletic. I am smart. I am kind)
