Lesson Progression

  1. Students will begin lesson as a group on the carpet. The teacher will explain to students that they will be learning about plants (specifically flowers).
  2. The teacher will help students generate questions they would like to know about flowers (how do they grow? What do they need in order to survive?  What types of flowers have they seen before? Etc.) The teacher should only scaffold in helping generate the questions. The students should be the ones creating the questions so that they are learning what is most interesting to them. The teacher will write out the questions on chart paper (8-10 questions).
  3. After writing out the questions, the teacher will ask students how might they find out the answers to these questions. Once they have discussed ways in which they could find answers to the questions listed, the teacher will help students research the questions and find the answers (mainly on smartboard). The teacher will write down the answers under the questions as they find them.
  4. The teacher will then explain to students that they will complete a flower project. Each student will choose a type of flower and research three interesting facts about the flower. They must write out the three facts and print out a photo of the flower or either draw the flower themselves. This project can be done in the classroom over several days, or it can be sent home for students to work on it and have parents become involved in the project. Students should be given 1-2 weeks to complete this project.
  5. When the projects have all been turned in, each student will stand up and present their projects to the class. This would be a great opportunity for families to be invited to hear each student present their projects.

Teacher Notes

When giving students ideas to think about when researching their flower have them reflect on the questions that you answered together as a class. Also, if you have a classroom garden this would be a great opportunity for the students to observe and do things within it as well.
