Grade(s):

  • 1

Subject(s):

Other Instructional Materials or Notes:

  • Various flowers for students to dissect.
  • Handout with 4 sections for drawing the following: petal, stigma, stamen, pollen

Lesson Progression

  • Review the parts of flowers and pass flowers out to students. Have students dissect their flowers and find the different parts mentioned.
  • On a handout, have students draw the parts you want to draw attention to.
  • At the end of the lesson play a quick game of pollinator tag to help students understand how pollination works.
    • Tape cotton balls to a set of students. They will represent flowers with pollen
    • The other set of students will be pollinators.
    • Set a timer and ask the “pollinators” to collect pollen from other students as quickly as they can.
    • This will demonstrate the energy demand needed for many insects to achieve the same feat.
