Essential Question
What are the parts of a flower? How are they used in the process of pollination?
Grade(s):
- 1
Subject(s):
Recommended Technology:
Other Instructional Materials or Notes:
- Various flowers for students to dissect.
- Handout with 4 sections for drawing the following: petal, stigma, stamen, pollen
- Cotton balls
- Tape
Lesson Progression
- Review the parts of flowers and pass flowers out to students. Have students dissect their flowers and find the different parts mentioned.
- On a handout, have students draw the parts you want to draw attention to.
- At the end of the lesson play a quick game of pollinator tag to help students understand how pollination works.
- Tape cotton balls to a set of students. They will represent flowers with pollen
- The other set of students will be pollinators.
- Set a timer and ask the “pollinators” to collect pollen from other students as quickly as they can.
- This will demonstrate the energy demand needed for many insects to achieve the same feat.
Flower Worksheet
Worksheet for students to draw the flower parts they have discovered through dissection.

- Life Science: Plants and Their Environments
- 1.L.5 The student will demonstrate an understanding of how the structures of plants help them survive and grow in their environments.
- 1.L.5A Plants have specific structures that help them survive, grow, and produce more plants. Plants have predictable characteristics at different stages of development.
- 1.L.5A.1 Obtain and communicate information to construct explanations for how different plant structures (including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds) help plants survive, grow, and produce more plants.
- 1.L.5A.2 Construct explanations of the stages of development of a flowering plant as it grows from a seed using observations and measurements.
