5v5 Flag Football Game

Equipment Needed:

  • One football per game
  • 14 cones per game
  • Flag belts
  • Flags
  • Jerseys (pinnies) for each student

For this game, there will be two teams of 5 students each squaring off against each other. The offense will have a quarterback, running back, a center, and two receivers. The 5 students who are on defense can either play a man to man style defense or play zone defense depending on what they prefer (man to man would be easiest). The field that the students will be playing on will be 80 yards long or however much space you have. The field will be marked with 14 different cones (2 cones each to mark the end lines, 2 goal lines, the 2 5-yard lines, and the 40-yard line). The students will begin at the 5-yard line in front of the offensive goal line. The offense will huddle in order to call a play and the play will begin when the center snaps the ball to the quarterback. The running back will be able to become a receiver and catch the ball out of the backfield if the ball is not handed to him for a running play. On defense, there will be one rusher who will try to rush the quarterback after a 4-second count (or however long you designate the count). The centers job is to snap the ball and then block the rusher to prevent them from getting to the quarterback. A couple rules to follow are:

  • The offense has 4 plays to get across the midfield line for a new set of downs.
  • After a score, the defense becomes the offense and will begin play at their own 5-yard line (near their endzone)
  • If the defense stops the offense on downs or intercepts a pass the defense will become the offense at that point in the field.
  • Use a marker or flag to indicate the line of scrimmage
  • Students will be able to rotate positions during each possession so that everyone has the opportunity to play different positions.
  • Quarterback can run once past the line of scrimmage

Offense: Have students use play cards when calling plays in the huddle so that calling plays is in a timely manner. You can have teams create their own play cards or create your own. Play cards should include 4 running plays and 4-6 passing plays per team.

Defense: Students on defense can either play man to man or zone defense. If you have not covered zone defense have students play man to man.

Fair play:

  • Once a defender grabs a flag, they should hand it back to the offensive player
  • Penalties will be assessed for rules infractions

Communication:

  • Students should immediately raise a pulled flag to indicate where the play stopped and the new line of scrimmage
  • In the huddle, only the quarterback calls the plays
  • A signal is called by the quarterback to begin a play (example: Ready, Set, Hike)
