Lesson Progression
- Ask students to show on their faces how they are feeling this morning.
- Say “wow I see a lot of different emotions!”
- Ask students to say words that match how they are feeling. Record these words on a paper. Or you may choose students to complete a Jamboard and they will write the words themselves.
- Tell students that they showed how they were feeling with pictures and words. Both of the methods showed the reader how they were feeling.
- Pull up the interactive emoji slide.
- Have students complete the slide. They will drag and drop the correct emoji into the box and then write 2-3 sentences about how they are feeling.
- Once they have completed the activity, tell students they are going to use the emoji to show the meaning instead of words.
- They are going to write a story about the morning for the first day of school. Explain this is a narrative piece of writing. The students will put the emoji they chose in the blank instead of the word. (see example in resources)
- Have students share their writing with others.
