Elementary Field Day Activities
- Tug of War
Equipment: 1 or 2 long ropes, poly spots, cones
How to play: Split students into two teams. Each team will be lined up on separate halves of the rope. The center line of the rope should be directly above a marked spot on the ground with 2 cones on either side of the center line about 5-8 feet away. When the teacher blows the whistle each team will begin pulling the rope towards the cone on their side. A team wins when the center line on the rope crosses the cone on their side.
Tip: Try to even out teams based on weight and level of strength
- Three-legged Relay Race
Equipment: Cones, string/rope
How to play: Separate students into groups of 4. Within each group there will be two sets of partners. Each set of partners will stand side by side and tie their inside legs together forming “one leg”. Make sure the rope is not too tight but not too loose. When the teacher blows the whistle, students will begin working as a team to run to their colored cone and back to the starting line. When the pair get back to the starting line, the other two members of their team will begin moving to their colored cone and back to the starting line. The first team to successfully get both sets of partners back to the starting line wins.
- Corn hole
Equipment: Corn hole boards, bean bags, cones or polyspots
How to play: Have students partner up, with each set of partners having one corn hole board and 4 bean bags each. Explain to students that each bean bag they make in the hole is 3 points and each bean bag on the board is 1 point. Tosses must be underhand and tossed from the polyspot or cone. The student with the highest number of points at the end of the designated time wins.
- Sack Race
Equipment: Cones/polyspots, sacks
How to play: Have students put both feet into the sack. Students will have to hop from the starting line to the finish line without stepping out of their sack. The student who finishes fastest wins the race.
- Wheelbarrow Race
Equipment: Cones
How to play: Separate students into partners. Before the race begins, have one partner get into pushup position while the other picks up both their feet by the ankles. When the teacher blows the whistle, the partners will begin moving to their colored cone. The student in pushup position will begin using their arms to move while the partner holding the ankles will be walking. First team to cross the finish line wins.
- Egg or Water balloon Toss
Equipment: Cones, Eggs or water balloons
How to play: Have students partner up. Partners will stand across from each other starting at 5 feet. One partner will start with an egg or water balloon. They will toss it to their partner trying not to break it. If they break the egg or water balloon then they are out. If they successfully toss it and catch it, one partner will take a big step backwards. The last team standing wins.
- Pizza Delivery
Equipment: Cones, 1 disc per student
How to play: The object of the game is to walk around while balancing your “pizza” on your palm without someone knocking it off or it falling off. The students may also try to knock other students pizza’s off their hands.
- Cherry on Top
Equipment: Cones, foam balls, hula hoops
How to play: This is a relay race. Separate the students into equal groups. The object of the game is for the students to start with their teams color ball and run down to their colored hula-hoop and cones. The student will place their ball on top of their team’s cone and run back. The first team to have all their teams’ balls balanced on their cones wins.
- Pie Pan Race
Equipment: 1 aluminum pie or casserole pan per team, 2 buckets per team, Water
How to play: This is a relay race. The students will start in a line behind their team’s cone and there will be a bucket of water about 20 feet away. One at a time the students will run down carrying their pie pan and try to fill it up with as much water as possible. They will then run back to their team and the water left in their pan will be put into their teams bucket. The team that fills their buckets up the fastest wins.
- Water Bottle Bowling
Equipment: Water bottles filled with water, polyspots, small balls
How to play: Set up six or ten water bottles in a triangle like at a bowling alley. Have students stand about 10-15 away and roll a ball towards the water bottles trying to knock down as many as they can.
