Cone Flip Challenge

Equipment: Small cones, Large Cones, Hula Hoops

Task 1: Partner Cone Flip Challenge

How to play: Spread hula hoops around the gym and place one small cone in each of the hoops. There will be two partners at each hoop. When the game starts, students will begin taking turns flipping the cone. The first partner to successfully land the cone (standing up) wins. Both partners will either high five, fist bump, or shake hands to show good sportsmanship. Once they do this, the winner will take a “victory lap” by jogging around the gym and the person that lost will stay at the hula hoop and raise their hands. Make sure to tell the students which direction to run around the gym. Once they run their lap they will come back to the playing area and find someone new to play who is raising their hands. This is a continuous game that can be played for 5-15 minutes.

Task 2: Cone Flip Relay Challenge

How to play: Separate students into 4-6 lines depending on class size. Ideally, you want about 5-6 students in each line. Talk to the students about what good sportsmanship and teamwork looks like (encouraging each other, not making fun another team). For the relays, each team will have 3 small cones in a line in front of them and one large cone at the end. When the teacher says go, the first person in each team will run to the first cone and attempt to land it by flipping it. Whether they land it or not, they will still return to the back of the line. Only one flip every time it is their turn. Once the team successfully lands the first cone, they next person will go to the second cone and so on until they get to the large cone. Once a student successfully lands the large cone, the team will go back to their line and have a seat. Encourage the teams that are already finished to cheer on the remaining teams that are still working.

                Extensions:

  • Switch the teams up so that they are working with new students every round
  • The winner gets to pick one player to “steal” from another team
  • Add in two large cones instead of one
