Lesson Progression

  1. To start off the lesson, teacher will present the KWL chart and ask the students if they know what a KWL chart is.
  2. Teacher will allow students to talk amongst each other about what they know about a KWL chart.
  3. Teacher will explain what a KWL chart is.
  4. T: To start off, we are going to fill out the K column. The K stands for what you already know about the life cycle of a butterfly.  Next we will fill out the W column, which stands for what you want to learn about the life cycle of the butterfly.  At the end of this lesson, we will reflect what we have learned in the L column, which stands for what we have learned.
  5. T: Raise your hand if you can tell me something that you already know about the life cycle of a butterfly.
  6. Allow 2-4 students to tell the teacher and the rest of the class what they already know.
  7. T: Great answers class! Now can any of you tell me something that you do not already know about the life cycle of a butterfly but want to know?
  8. Allow 2-4 students to tell the teacher and the rest of the class what they want to learn.
  9. T: Awesome, well I hope that you all learn a lot of new things about the life cycle of a butterfly after we complete this lesson.
  10. T: To start off, we are going to watch a short rap video that introduces the concept of the life cycle of a butterfly.  Feel free to follow and sing along!
  11. Teacher will play video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rvGUevGxDk.
  12. T: Now that we have watched the video and are more aware of the different stages in the life cycle of a butterfly, we are going to create our own butterfly life cycle.
  13. T: I am going to hand each of you the materials needed to complete this project, but do not touch the materials until I give you further instructions.
  14. Teacher will ask different students to hand out each of the items.  The materials will include for each student: butterfly cutout, scissors, glue, crayons, three different types of noodles, and two beans.
  15. Once all the items have been passed out to each student, teacher will start by showing an example of the butterfly that was created by the teacher.
  16. T: Look at my example to see how your butterfly should look. Start off by cutting out your butterfly, and then begin labeling. In the top two wings, you need to label “eggs” and “caterpillar.”  In the bottom two wings, you need to label “chrysalis” and “butterfly.”
  17. T: The two beans are going to represent Stage 1 of the life cycle, the eggs.  The spirali pasta is going to represent Stage 2 of the life cycle, the caterpillar.  The shell pasta is going to represent Stage 3 of the life cycle, the chrysalis.  Lastly, the farfella pasta is going to represent the final State of the life cycle, the butterfly.
  18. T: Do any of you have any questions?
  19. Allow students to ask questions if they have any.
  20. Teacher will walk around room and assist students as needed.
  21. T: You will have 20 minutes to complete this activity.
  22. Teacher will set a timer on the board so that the students will keep track of the amount of time that they have.
  23. Teacher will continue to walk around room and assist students until the time is over.
  24. T: Great job class!  Your butterflies look awesome, I am so proud!
  25. T: To make sure that you have fully understood the life cycle, I am going to hand out one last worksheet.  You only have a few minutes to complete so work together to complete this worksheet.
  26. Teacher sets a 10-minute timer on the board.
  27. Once timer goes off, teacher will collect the worksheet in order to assess their understanding of the different stages.
  28. T: To finish our KWL, can any of you raise your hand and tell me some things that you have learned today about the life cycle of a butterfly.
  29. Allow 2-4 students to tell the teacher what they have learned.
  30. T: Great job class!  Now lets pack up and get prepared for lunch.

Assessments

In order to assess the students, the teacher will check the correctness of the students based off of their answers to the worksheet.  If the student’s answers seem to be correct, the teacher will know that the students have grasped the understanding of the life cycle of a butterfly.  The teacher will also be able to assess the students by how they answer the L column in the KWL chart.
