Battleship is a fun game for elementary-age students that involves strategy, hand-eye coordination, balance, and rolling skills. For this game, students will be in teams of 4 with each student standing on their “ship” which is the gymnastics mat which will be placed on the gym floor wherever the teams decide to place it. Each team will have 4 bowling pins and will place them on each side of the gymnastics mat. Each team will also start with 2-3 balls. When the teacher blows the whistle, the students will begin rolling the balls towards other teams’ pins trying to knock them down. When a team has all 4 of their pins knocked down the team loses and will walk towards the side of the gym to become land dwellers. The game will continue until there is only 1 team left with at least one pin still standing. There will only be a limited number of students able to play at a time. The other students that are not playing will be towards the side of the gym floor and “land dwellers”. The land-dwellers don’t belong to a team but can pick up a ball and roll it in order to knock down pins. So, ships must keep an eye out for other ships as well as the land dwellers.
Rules:
- Students must keep at least one foot on the mat at all times. If they step off the mat with both feet, then they are out and have to walk to the side of the gym to become a land dweller.
- Students must roll the ball. If a student is caught throwing the ball, then they are completely out of the game.
- Students may block the balls from hitting their pins but still must keep at least one foot on the mat
- If a student accidentally knocks over their own pin, they must leave it down. They cannot stand the pin back up.
- Set a boundary for the land dwellers such as they must stay outside the boundary lines of the court. Land dwellers may walk/run but cannot cross the boundary
