Day 1

Students will be working on their serving shots by self-tossing a birdie and hitting it over the net into the opposite side of the court.  There will be 4 people on a court at a time with two hitters and two retrievers. Students will hit 3-5 birdies (depending on the amount available). Once one partner hits all of their birdies then the other partner will pick the birdies up and it will be their turn to practice on their serving.

Extension: If students are serving with ease, have the students try to vary how hard they hit the birdie and the height at which they serve the birdie. If students are having a hard time getting the birdie over the net then they can take a few steps towards the net.

Refinement: Really make sure the students are focusing on pointing their shoulder towards the target. This will help the students increase the accuracy of their serves

Application: See how many serves you and your partner can land in the opponent's court in 2 minutes.

Day 2

The students will be playing badminton battleship which is a 2 vs 2 game. This game is just like a regular battleship except you can see your targets. Teams will set up 3 “ships” (hula hoops) anywhere on their side of the court while the other team will try to knock the ships out by serving and landing a birdie inside a hula hoop. Teams will get one shot per round and will alternate who serves after each round.

Extension: If students are having a hard time hitting the targets then have both partners on the team serve each round rather than just one.

Refinement: Make sure students focus on pointing their shoulders to their target and following through.

Day 3

Students will display their skill of serving in a small-sided game called the king of the court which is a 2 v 2 game. Students will begin the game with a serve and begin volleying back and forth. Whichever team loses a volley first has to choose one person from that team to stand out for the next volley making it a 2 vs 1 game. If the team with 2 players wins the 2nd volley then they win a point but if the team with 1 person wins the volley then the person who stood out gets to come back in. The goal of the game is to get 5 points by knocking off your opponent one by one. When you knock opponents both out that’s when you win a point.
