Equipment: Bows, Arrows, Cones, Targets, Balloons

How to Shoot:

  1. Stance- Feet should be shoulder width apart. Students will put the shooting line in-between their feet.
  2. Nock Arrow-
    1. Grab arrow below fletching
    2. Take the arrow up and over the bow
    3. Turn different colored feather towards you
    4. Snap nock onto the string below the nock locator
  3. Draw string hand set- 3 finger archers’ groove.
  4. Bow hand set- Rotate bow arm elbow down and away from the bow string
  5. Pre-draw
  6. Draw- with arm parallel to the ground, smoothly pull the bow string towards the face
  7. Anchor- Index fingertip placed at the corner of mouth
  8. Aim- align the vertical bow string and reference the arrow point on the target
  9. Shot set-up- Maintain steady bow arm and drawing muscles. Using back muscles, begin a slight rearward movement of the drawing elbow
  10. Release
  11. Follow Through

Safety

  • Waiting line vs shooting line
  • No dry fire (firing the bow without an arrow on it)
  • If you drop an arrow, do not pick it up. Have students raise their hand and let the teacher bring them a new arrow.
  • When finished shooting, return bow back to rack and walk to waiting line

Whistle Commands

    1. One Whistle- First person in line goes and gets a bow off of the bow rack and goes to their shooting line and puts the bow on their toes. We call this “Bows on Toes”
    2. Two Whistles- Begin Shooting. Once done, return bow to bow rack and return to the waiting line
    3. Three Whistles- Go and retrieve arrows off of target and place back into cone

Day One- This will be the day where the students will not get a lot of practice. For day one the teacher will go down the shooting line one student at a time and check off their skills. The teacher will be guiding and watching the student to make sure that they are doing everything correctly. Once a student is checked off they can finish shooting the rest of their arrows.

Day Two- Students will be put into groups and will get lots of practice shooting the bow and arrow. The teacher will go around and make sure everyone is doing everything correctly.

Day Three- The students will begin playing a game called darts. The teacher will preassign the students into evenly talented groups. The goal for that day is for each group to “close out” each ring on the target by hitting that ring. Once they hit a ring they will mark that off of their list. If a student hits a ring that is already closed out, it does not count towards anything. Once all rings are closed, the group has completed that challenge. The next challenge will be to hit the tiny bullseye is each corner of the target.

Day Four- The teacher will tape balloons to each target and the students will be trying to pop the balloons on the target by shooting them.
