Lesson Progression

  1. Students will begin the lesson on the carpet.
  2. The teacher will read the story ‘’What if you had animal fur’ by Sandra Markle.
  3. After the read-aloud, the teacher will ask students about what they think animal coverings are.
  4. Have students share what they think.
  5. The teacher will go through the PowerPoint with students about the different types of animal coverings. Throughout the PowerPoint, the teacher should direct ideas and discussions back to the story that was read at the beginning of the lesson.
  6. After the PowerPoint, the teacher will send students back to their seats to work on their animal flipbook. In the flipbook, students should create a page for each animal group. On the page, students should include the animal's body covering through writing or drawing, as well as give examples of the types of animals within that group and other characteristics that they have. Students should work on this for about 20 minutes.
  7. After the time is up, students will return back to the carpet and have the opportunity to share their flipbooks with the class.
