The Massachusetts 54th | Walter Edgar's Journal - Episode 3

Dr. Stephen R. Wise talks more in depth about one of the first African American regiments, the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, commanded by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The 54th suffers heavy losses during their assault on Fort Wagner in July, 1863, and are ordered to fall back. Col. Shaw is killed during the attack.  Other regiments attempt to take Wagner as well, and also suffer heavy losses. The assault on Fort Wagner by the Massachusetts 54th is depicted in the movie “Glory.”
