Senator Fritz Hollings was good friends with the Tecklenburg family, and took in Michael as an intern. After working for Sen. Hollings, Michael would find himself in Chicago, Illinois, working for the Alexander Graham Bell Association For The Deaf; an advocate for oral education. Michael would then attend the University of South Carolina's Honor's College as its first deaf student, and then later, Columbia School of Law.
