The daughter of Mississippi potter Homer Wade Stewart, Hattie Mae married journeyman potter Horace “Jug” Brown. She met Brown when he worked in her family’s Louisville, Mississippi pottery in the 1930s. In 1940, they moved to Alabama and opened their own shop.
As her husband’s health began to fail, Hattie Mae and her sons continued to run the pottery. When Jug Brown passed away in 1965, she relocated to nearby Hamilton where her son Jerry, a ninth generation potter, continues to turn pots in the Brown and Stewart traditions. Jerry Brown was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1992.
