Lesson Progression
- The teacher will say: “There’s an old saying that goes “in order to have good friends you have to be a good friend.” What does that mean? Do you think it’s true?
- The teacher will use anchor charts to help students list some things that make you a good friend. See Examples:
- The teacher will create a concept map, which is a circle within a circle on an anchor chart.
- The teacher and students will watch the video: How Do You Use a Circle Map?
- In the center circle, the teacher will write “Characteristics of a Good Friend.” The teacher will begin by pulling some characteristics from the brainstorming session at the beginning of the lesson
- The teacher will then introduce Gullah Tales and the characters of *Herman and Snail using the following link: What a Friend (English Version) | Gullah Tales | Knowitall.org
- The teacher and students will add more “good” traits to the concept map.
- Connections/Lesson Wrap-Up: We defined what a friend was. We used a circle map to organize our ideas about “good friend characteristics”. We also talked about Folk Tales and how we can learn lessons from them.
- The teacher will ask the students to create a circle concept map to their Reading Response Journal.
Teacher Notes
This lesson can be used as the "kick-off" for the Interdependent Relationships unit recommended by the State Department for 3rd grade or as a mini-lesson on concept charts.
