Lesson Progression
I. Introduction
Engage: Start with a real-world example. "Imagine a store has a 25% off sale. What does that mean? How much would a $20 shirt cost?"
Review: Briefly review the concept of percent as "out of one hundred." Use visuals like a 10x10 grid to represent 100%.
II. Converting Decimals to Percents
Explain: "To convert a decimal to a percent, we move the decimal point two places to the right and add the percent sign (%)"
Example 1: 0.75 = 75%
Example 2: 0.08 = 8%
Example 3: 1.25 = 125%
Model: Demonstrate the process on the board with several examples, thinking aloud as you move the decimal.
Guided Practice: Have students work on a few problems together as a class.
Example Practice Problems:
Convert to a percent:
0.35
0.09
1.50
0.8
III. Converting Percents to Decimals
Explain: "To convert a percent to a decimal, we move the decimal point two places to the left and remove the percent sign."
Example 1: 50% = 0.50
Example 2: 4% = 0.04
Example 3: 210% = 2.10
Model: Demonstrate the process on the board with more examples, emphasizing the reverse movement of the decimal.
Guided Practice: Have students work on a few problems together, ensuring they understand the direction of the decimal shift.
Example Practice Problems:
Convert to a decimal:
25%
7%
130%
6.5%
IV. Independent Practice
Performance Task- Thanksgiving Challenge: Distribute the printable version of the Thanksgiving Challenge (linked in the resource tab) OR have students use devices to access the challenge online (linked in the resources tab).
Circulate: Move around the classroom to assist students and answer questions.
V. Closure
Quick Review: Ask students to summarize the rules for converting between decimals and percents.
Teacher Notes
differentiation: Provide students with a visual aid like a number line with decimals on one side and percents on the other. Begin with easier ingredients in the turkey recipe such as the onion to solidify the concept that converting 1 = 100%. Move to the freshly ground black pepper for 1/2 = 50%. Build up to more complex figures.
extension: Introduce percents greater than 100% and less than 1%. Have students research their favorite Thanksgiving recipes (or bring from home!). Students will use the recipes and adjust the yield to various ratios. For example, have students take the original recipe and scale each of the ingredient amounts to a ratio value of 1:3.
