Telling Time through Theatre!

During this lesson, students will convert digital hours and minutes to analog time while being the hands of a clock!

Duration
Less than 1 hour
Lesson Type

Lesson Created By: StephanieWalker

Lesson Partners: ABC (Arts in Basic Curriculum)

Essential Question

How can I demonstrate my understanding of telling time on an analog clock to the nearest five-minute interval through physical acting?

Grade(s):

  • 2

Other Instructional Materials or Notes:

  • Analog clock
  • Index cards with clock numbers on them
  • 2 pool noodles/long sticks
  • Time-telling dice (or slips of paper with hour & minutes written in digital)

Lesson Progression

  1. At the beginning of the lesson, students will be given index cards with the number 1-12 on them. Working together, they must form an analog clock on the carpet.
  2. The theatre teacher will count with the students the number 1-12 and then what each number is in 5’s.
  3. A pair of students will be handed time-telling dice to roll. As they roll, they will call out the time which will be written on the board by a designated student in digital form.
  4. Two new students will take a pool noodle and create that time on the clock, becoming the minute and hour hands. The rest of the class will report whether they are correct or not. This will continue until all students have had turns with at least one of the tasks.

Teacher Notes

It is important to stress the fact that the hour hand is affected by the minute hand. The closer the minute hand is to the 12, the farther away from the number the hour hand is. To add another element of theatre, you could ask the students to show what they would do at specific times shown (ex: eating dinner at 6 pm, brushing their teeth at 7:15 am, etc)

Extension: Could also add bonus questions like – "what time will it be in 5 mins? 10 mins?" etc
Differentiation: This task can also be switched up – for example, students can show a time on the analog clock, while students have to make it on the digital dice.

Assessments

Both teachers will check for understanding about time-telling on an analog clock vs. digital through observation and class discussion. As always, it is expected that the classroom teacher continues and/or refer to this integration lesson when students return to the classroom.
