Teen Numbers
The students will learn about teen numbers. They will be able to build and represent teen numbers and also write equations to show these numbers.

Lesson Progression
- Students will begin the lesson on the carpet.
- The teacher will read the story ‘Count and See’ by Tana Hoban to get students thinking about teen numbers. Have students take notice of the images on each page. Have students come up and count the objects one by one aloud as a class. Do this for all the teen number pages.
- After the read-aloud, the teacher will lead the students in an activity called ‘Finger Flash.’ The teacher will hold up a large card with the number 10 on it, and will have cards with numbers 1-9 on them. When the teacher places one of the 1-9 cards over the 0 in number 10 to make a teen number, the students will throw the number 10 up to the side using their fingers and then throw the number that is covering the 0. For example, if the teacher places a 5 over the 0 the students will say ’10’ (while throwing a 10 to the side using their fingers) ‘and 5’ (while showing the number 5 on their fingers. The students will then say 15.
- After ‘Finger Flash’ students will break into workshop. Students should work in each workshop for 12-15 minutes and then rotate stations.
Workshop Station 1: Teen Number Mountains- students will be given a sheet with a mountain on it and a blank equation at the bottom, 19 blocks, cards with numbers 11-20 on them, dry erase markers and a wet paper towel. Students will work with partners on their level. One of them will choose a teen number card and place it at the top of the mountain. The other student will break the teen number apart (thinking back to finger flash activity). They will show this using the blocks. For example, if the number was ‘13’ the student would place 10 blocks going up one side of the mountain and 3 blocks going up the other side of the mountain. Once they have done this, they will write the equation on the bottom using the dry erase markers. (10 + 3 = 13). They will then erase the equation and clear the paper and switch. **Paper should be laminated so that things can be wrote and erased**
Workshop Station 2: Building Teen Numbers- students will be given ten blocks, one blocks, and teen number cards 11-20. Students will work with partners on their level. One student will choose a teen number card, the other student will use the ten and ones block to build that teen number. They will take turns doing this until they both have used each teen number card.
5. After everyone has done both stations the students will come together back on the carpet to share things that they learned during workshop and some of the equations that they wrote in the first station.
Teacher Notes
Differentiation: Build on knowledge acquired learning numbers 1-10. Pull for small group remediation/ modeling as necessary.
Extension: Extend the numbers into larger values OR have students come up with multiple representations of the same number. Ex: 18 = 8 + 10, 18 = 9 + 9, 18 = 1 + 17.

Assessments
Students will be assessed through questioning, and during the finger flash activity in the whole group part of the lesson. The students will also be assessed during workshop.
