Statue of Liberty

1. The teacher will have students come to the carpet to begin the lesson.
2. The teacher will explain that they will be learning about the statue of liberty, and ask students if they have ever heard about this statue, and if so what do they know about it.
3. Have students share what they know.
4. The teacher will read the story, The Story of the Statue of Liberty by Betsy and Giulio Maestro. During the read-aloud, the teacher will stop and ask questions throughout to check for understanding.
5. After the read-aloud, the teacher will give students a virtual tour of the statue of liberty. This gives students the opportunity to have a better feel of what the statue of liberty is really like. The teacher will allow students to ask questions if any.
6. After the virtual tour, the teacher will have students go back to their tables and write one to two things they learned about the statue of liberty and draw a picture to go with it. Students will have 15-20 minutes to create their writing.
7. After the time is up, students will have time to share what they created.

Students will be assessed through questioning that is being done during the read-aloud. Once they complete their writing piece, it will be taken up as an assessment also.
