Spanish-American War and Panama Canal

Students will be able to understand the reason for the United States gaining control of new territories. Students will know the background information concerning the Panama Canal and the United States' involvement in the building.

Lesson Progression

1. Explain to students that they will be learning about the Panama Canal and Spanish-American War today. 
2. Call them together to the rug to watcht the two videos found in lesson resources.
3. Quickly discuss videos as a whole - asking if there are questions.
4. Begin by reading the informational worksheets found in lesson resources. 
5. Call on students to read different parts of the sheets and stop between readers to further explain information read.
6. Explain directions:
Students will recieve their worksheets with the fill in the blank questions and begin moving around the room to find the cards with the answers (found in lesson resources). The cards will be placed randomly around the room. Once they find the card with the answer they are looking for, they will turn it over and complete the exercise that is on the back. For example, the card might have the year "1898" and on the back will say "10 squats." 
Students may use the informational sheets to help them find the correct answers.
7. As students are working, walk around checking for correct answers.
8. Students will complete worksheet and the come back together as a group.
9. Go over answers and clarify misconceptions when needed.
