Lesson Progression

1. The teacher will have students come to the carpet to begin the lesson.

2. The teacher will explain that they will be learning about rhyming words, and ask students to name a few rhyming words.

3. Have students share what they know.

4. The teacher will read the story Hop on Pop by: Dr. Seuss. During the read-aloud, the teacher will stop and ask questions throughout to check for understanding.

5. After the read-aloud, the teacher will go over the directions on how they will create their classroom rhyming book. The teacher will ask each student for two rhyming words that they would like to place in the book. Each student must illustrate the two rhyming words they chose. As the teacher calls on each student to say their two words the teacher will chart each students word on chart paper for the entire class to see. (each students page will be cut in half and there will be one word on each side. Once the book is placed together, the matches will be mixed together and will be used for the students to put back together and practice their rhyming words.) Once every student has chosen their words, the teacher will make sure that the students do not have any questions before beginning.

6. The teacher will send them back to their tables to work independently. Students will have fifteen minutes to complete their rhyming sheet for the book.

7. Once the students are finished with their illustrations, a few students will share with the class.

8. The pages will be put together into a book for the students to use in the coming weeks as a matching activity and will be used for assessment.
