Lesson Progression

Day 1

Whole Group: As a whole group, we will read the book The Raft. We will discuss the theme as well as the main idea of the text.

Independent: Students will use the copy of the book on their iPads to answer Level 1 text dependent questions using the RACE method we practiced earlier in the year.

Day 2

Whole Group: As a whole group, we will read the text The Raft a second time.  We will discuss the characters in the book.

Independent: Students will use the copy of the book on their iPads to answer Level 2 text dependent questions using the RACE method we practiced earlier in the year.

 

Day 3

Whole Group: As a whole group we will dicsuss the importance of reading a text multiple times and how each time you read it could lead to new discoveries. Students will then get with a partner and read the text together for a 3rd time.  Together they will discuss the setting of the book and why it is important to the plot.

Independent: Students will use the copy of the book on their iPads to answer Level 3 text dependent questions using the RACE method we practiced earlier in the year.

 

Day 4

Whole Group: We will review the text and create a noticings chart of everything they have noticed in the text after reading it 3 times.  We will discuss things they noticed on the 2nd and 3rd reads that they didn’t notice on the 1st read.

Independent: Invite students to read the text again if they need to, and then have them go back to the text to answer level 4 text dependent questions using the RACE method.  Talk about how they were able to dig deeper into the text to answer level 4 questions after reading the text multiple times and how that would not have been easy or maybe even possible after only their first read on Monday.

Day 5

Whole Group: As a whole group we will have a discussion about the book The Raft from last week and on the importance of multiple reads.

Independent:The students will take a formal assessment using the book The Raft.
