Lesson Progression
- Show students a plant. Ask them where they think the plant came from.
- Log onto Pebblego.com and research "What Are Plants"
- Have students tell what they learned through thier research on Pebblego and chart their responses
- Read students the story The Tiny Seed. As you read, go through why some seeds didn't grow, examples of this include the weather being too cold, or there not being enough water provided.
- Now, discuss what elements plants need to survive.
- Watch the video "What do plants need to grow"
- Have students chart the 3 things plants need in order to survive.
Class Research
- As a class, plant 3 plants in different pots.
- Place one plant in the direct sunlight, one plant in a dark place where it gets no light and the third plant in a place that only gets lindirect ight from the classroom.
- Give the plant in the sunlight water each day. Give the plant in the dark, no water and give the plant that gets indirect light water once.
- Watch the plants for several days and chart the students' noticings.
- After a week, have the students determine if plants need sun and water in order to grow.
Assessment
- Have each student draw and/or write three things a plant needs to survive.
