Lesson Progression

Day 1:

Mini Lesson: Perimeter. Give each student a piece of color paper. Students will make a foldable. An example of this is in the resources section. Students will fill out perimeter today.
Pass out the Perimeter, Area, and Volume sheet. Only solve Perimeter part today. Then, use the Area, Perimeter, Volume slides to answer slides 2-6 independently, then go over together.

Day 2:

Mini Lesson: Review perimeter again. Look at the foldable and review formula - remind students that the number of sides each shape has is how many sides they should add together.
Pass out the Perimeter with Fractions sheet. They can work together to use their strategies in adding fractions to find the perimeter of each shape. It may be helpful to do one as an example first.

Day 3:

Mini Lesson: Area. Today students will fill out the area part of their foldable. Students will solve the Area problems on the Area, Perimeter, Volume sheets they got Day 1. Then, use the Area, Perimeter, Volume slides to answer slides 7-10 independently, then go over together.

Day 4:

Mini Lesson: Review Area and Perimeter using the formula and a couple of example problems. Today students will write the information for Volume in their foldables. Then, answer the questions on the sheet they got Day 1. Lastly, solve the slides for Volume independently.

Day 5:

Pass out the Volume Common Formative. Students will complete independently.

Day 6:

Have students review the formulas and definitions of each measurement. Then, pull up the "Make a Decision" google slides. Students will read each scenario and decide with a partner which measurement would be applicable.

Teacher Notes

Differentiation: Prerequisite skills such as multiplication may need to be reviewed. To assist students in knowing when to apply perimeter vs area formulas, provide real world scenarios of each and do a verbal assessment prior to moving on. (For example, a fence around a pool would need which measurement? A pool cover would need which measurement? Grass in a yard would need which measurement? etc)

Extension: Give students a measurement. Have them create word problems that satisfy the product. Have students write about the differences between the three measures and when to use each.
