Pattern This

Students will learn the difference between an AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC pattern. Students will use manipulatives that consist of colored blocks, shapes, and number cards to form these patterns. After the lesson, students will create their own AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC patterns.

Duration
1-2 hours

Lesson Progression

  1. The students will come into class and be instructed, by the teacher, to sit on the carpet.
  2. T: Good morning class, today we will be learning about different patterns using colored blocks, numbers, and shapes.  Watch this video to get a better understanding of what we will be doing today. Make sure to pay attention to the different types of patterns.
  3. The teacher will show an introductory video about patterns to the students- Stop the video at: 1:40 *video can be found in lesson resources
  4. Teacher passes out individual whiteboards and dry erase markers to each student sitting on the carpet.
  5. T: Now we are going to review the patterns that were in the video. I am going to write a pattern on the whiteboard, and I will ask you to draw/write, what comes next in the pattern on your whiteboard.
  6. Teacher will draw AB pattern on white board by using triangles and squares.
  7. T: Draw on your whiteboard what shape you think comes next in the pattern. Then hold up your whiteboard when you have drawn the shape.
  8. Teacher will give positive feedback to the students if they answered correctly.  If the student answered incorrectly, help them figure out what they did wrong.
  9. Teacher will use her example on the board by explaining the AB pattern.
  10. Teacher will move to introducing the ABB pattern by drawing it on the whiteboard using the numbers five and seven.
  11. T: Draw on your whiteboard what number you think comes next in the pattern.  Then hold up your whiteboard when you have written the number.
  12. Teacher will give positive feedback to the students if they answered correctly.  If the student answered incorrectly, help them figure out what they did wrong.
  13. Teacher will use her example on the board by explaining the ABB pattern.
  14. Teacher will move to introducing the ABC pattern by drawing it on the whiteboard using the colors red (r), blue (b), and yellow (y).
  15. T: Draw on your whiteboard what color you think comes next in the pattern.  Then hold up your whiteboard when you have written the beginning letter of the color (r/b/y).
  16. Teacher will give positive feedback to the students if they answered correctly.  If the student answered incorrectly, help them figure out what they did wrong.
  17. Teacher will use her example on the board by explaining the ABC pattern.
  18. T: Now I am going to show you a new pattern on the board, that was not on the video.  I want you guys to see if you can tell me what numbers (5,7,9)  comes next in the pattern.  This will be called an AAB pattern. Once you have written what number comes next in the pattern, hold up your whiteboard to show me your answer.
  19. Teacher will give positive feedback to the students if they answered correctly.  If the student answered incorrectly, help them figure out what they did wrong.
  20. Teacher will use her example on the board by explaining the AAB pattern.
  21. T: Now that we have reviewed all four patterns, I am going to dismiss you from the carpet by tables, for you to practice these patterns using colored blocks, shapes, and numbers at your seats.
  22. Teacher will dismiss students from the carpet by their tables.
  23. Teacher will pass out worksheet to the students.
  24. Teacher will give two tables number cards, two tables colored blocks, and two tables shapes. The students will have five minutes to work with the supplies that was given to them, by filling out the pattern worksheet that was given to them.
  25. Once the 5 minutes is up, the table will have 1 minute to clean up the supplies while the clean up song is playing. Once the song is over the table captain will move the supplies to the next table.
  26. This will happen three times, so that all the students have the opportunity to work with the colored blocks, number cards, and shapes.
  27. As the students are working with the manipulatives, the teacher will walk around and assess the students while they work on the worksheet.
  28. Once the last rotation has occurred, and the students have cleaned up their tables, and the table captains have put away the materials, students will return back to their seats.
  29. The teacher will pass out construction paper and colored pencils and allow the students to create their own AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC patterns on the construction paper.
  30. The teacher will allow the students to work on creating their patterns for ten to fifteen minutes, and collect them to display in the classroom.
  31. T: Can anyone share something they learned about patterns, or something fun that they did during their time in centers?
  32. Teacher gives time for students to share. Once they have shared a few things, the teacher will instruct students to the next planned assignment for the day.

Teacher Notes

It may help if students are already assigned groups to work in when using the manipulatives.

Differentiation: Focus in on AB patterns prior to extending. Pull small group for remediation if necessary.

Extension: Allow students to create patterns outside of AB, ABB, AAB, and ABC patterns.

Assessments

Through the interaction with the students, the teacher can assess the students performance by the use of the manipulatives that go along with the worksheet. The teacher will walk around during the center time, and assess each individual student as they work on the worksheet using the manipulatives. By assessing individual students, the teacher will ask students, “Student H, can you show me an AAB pattern?” If the teacher sees that Student H is not participating. At the end of the lesson, asking the students to share what they have learned and allowing 4-5 students to share what they have learned (part of closure and self-reflection). The patterns they created on their own will also be assessed once collected.
