Lesson Progression

  1. The teacher will begin the lesson by counting numbers up to 20.
  2. The teacher will lead the students through counting numbers 0-20 pointing to the classroom number line for the students to follow along as they count aloud.
  3. The teacher will then break students into centers where they will practice counting numbers 0-20.

Center 1: Students will be given a grid, dice, and cubes. The students will take turns rolling the dice. They will place the cubes on the grid given based on the number that they roll. (example: if a student rolls a three, then they will place three cubes on their grid). The students will continue to take turns doing this until all of the cubes are gone. They will count how many cubes they each have on their grid. Whoever has the most cubes on their grid wins that round.

Center 2: Students will be given a worksheet where they are asked to trace numbers. Below that they will be asked to fill in the missing numbers in the grid.

Center 3: Students will be given a grid with numbers 0-20 placed on it and number cards with numbers 0-20 on them. They will choose a card from the deck and then use the building cubes to build the number to place on the grid.

**each center should be given 8-10 minutes to work before rotating.**

4. After the three rotations, the students will come together and the teacher will have them sit in a circle. The teacher will have a ball. They will pass the ball in a circle while counting 0-20. When you have the ball you must say what number comes next.
