Lesson Progression

1) Introduction: Duration: 20 minutes

The teacher will begin by engaging his/her students. The teacher will have students line up across the room and they will count beginning with one until each student has said a number to find out how many students there are in the class. Next, the students will put their hands out as one student high fives each student while counting by 5’s. Repeat this process for every student and have them choose if they would rather count by fives or tens.

Transition- Teacher will introduce the centers. Each center has an activity; when the activity is completed the students will demonstrate the activity to their teacher and she will reveal a number for them to place on the class hopscotch which will be used later in the lesson. This lesson can be presented like a game to students.

“Students, today we are going to play a series of games. Whenever your team finishes your game, you will present the activity to me, and I will give you a number for your team to place on our class hopscotch!”

2) Centers: Duration: 1 hour

Center 1: Counting by 1’s to 120 using manipulatives.

Center 2: Counting by 1’s to 120 by writing on dry-erase boards with partners.

Center 3: Counting by 5’s to 100 using nickels.

Center 4: Counting by 5’s to 100 using paint and handprints (counting fingers)

Center 5: Counting by 10’s to 100 using tens blocks.

Center 6: Counting by 10’s to 100 using dimes.

*Center directions are attached to this lesson as a resource

As students finish at their centers, they should ask teacher to look at their work (teacher will use checklist assessment to assess work) and then the teacher will give the students a number to place on the class hopscotch board. After students have completed this step they should create different quantities at their current center while waiting to move on to the next center.

Once center time is over, and the class hopscotch is filled with numbers, the students will play hopscotch. Each student will have a chance to play hopscotch and say the numbers to the rest of the class while they hop.

Teacher Notes

Differentiation: Consider heterogeneous / homogeneous groupings. If students are struggling, pull a small group to remediate. Focus first on adding ones before moving to fives and tens.

Extension: Add in additional variables to count by. Ex: count by 2s starting at 79.
