Lesson Progression

1. The students will spend several days going through and exploring non fiction books. Throughout these days, the class will discuss the difference between non fiction and fiction books. 

2. After the students have spent time exploring, the class will make a list/chart of all the features they found or learned about during their exploration. The students will use these to create their book.

3. The teacher will take time each day to introduce and discuss these text features. The students will either create or use magazines/books to find examples of these features. The students will keep these in a safe place until it's time to create their own book.

4. The students will begin making their book using their materials from the unit. The students will use this time to add what they would like to make sure their book meets the requirements.

5. The students will share their book. Depending on time and the situation, the students will either share to the class, small group, or one on one. 

6. The students will reflect on their work and make note of what they learned. 

Teacher Notes

This project based learning unit should be done in a way to have students learning and exploring in an exciting way. Depending on the exploration of the students led by the teacher can and will depend on the length of the unit as well as how much each text feature needs to be covered. The class can and should use books they are familiar with as well as new books to help broaden their understanding.

Assessments

The students will work throughout the unit to create different pages of their non fiction text features book. As a new feature is introduced, the students will create and add these pages to their book.
