Lesson Progression
1. T: Today we are going to be discussing/reviewing rhyming words. Rhyming words are two or more words that have the same or similar ending.
2. Share a few pairs of words aloud with them (Some that rhyme and some that don't.) Challenge students to identify the pairs that rhyme.
3. See if students can come up with some examples of other rhyming words on their own. Create a chart of these words so students can refer to them later if needed.
4. Next tell the class we will continue to practice identifying rhyming words. The Teacher will read a story. Students will point out rhyming words as they come up in the story.
5. Afterwards, pull up PowerPoint on smart board to continue practicing rhyming words.
6. We will review a PowerPoint that includes more examples of rhyming words, what rhyming words are, what they look like, and how they sound.
7. T: Now that we have seen multiple examples of rhyming words, I am going to hold up rhyming cards with pictures on them and you are going to tell me if the words rhyme or do not rhyme.
8. Teacher will go through rhyming cards with class.
9. T: Now you are going to have an opportunity to show what you know about rhyming words. Students will choose two rhyming words then use construction paper, markers, etc. to write and illustrate their words. (Extension: Challenge students who have mastered the concept to share more than one pair of rhyming words.) Allow students time to ask questions.
10. Set aside ample time for students to finish this assignment. Once everyone has finished, students will have an opportunity to share with the class.
11. The teacher will clear up any misconceptions or provide additional support as needed.
Teacher Notes
Challenge students who have mastered the concept to write/illustrate another rhyming pair.
The teacher will work with students who need additional support in a small group.
Rhyming Pairs
The students will be able to identify rhyming words. They will also be able to communicate two rhyming words of their own aloud during the lesson.
