Lesson Progression

Students will spend a week exploring their environment and finding things to measure!

Day One:
1. The teacher should begin by introducing the different tools used to measure objects. Good tools would be rulers and yardsticks.
2. The teacher should demonstrate how to use these tools.
3. The teacher will project images of common objects found in the classroom on the smart board and will use a tool on the Smartboard such as a ruler to measure these objects.
4. The teacher should print the attached documents for students, and staple them together to make a Measurement book for each student.
5. Give students book and have them complete day one! This should take students 15-20 minutes per day.

Day 2
-Have students complete day 2 in their books.
Day 3 (Outside)
-Have students complete day 3 in their books.
-The teacher will take students to an outdoor area such as the playground.
Day 4 (Hallway)
-Have students complete day 4 in their books.
-The students can complete this in the hallway. The teacher can take students as a group or send them in small groups.
Day 5
-Have students complete day 5 in their books.
-Give students an opportunity to share their measurements to the class. A document camera is a fun way for students to present materials they have created. The teacher should emphasize putting objects in order according to their measurements.

Teacher Notes

Differentiation: If students are struggling, provide 3 objects that have larger differences in length. Assist students in ordering the objects using their comparisons. If needed, begin with just comparing two objects prior to introducing the third.

Extension: Provide students with an increased number of objects to measure. Perhaps add two objects that have the same length and ask probing questions on placement in order.

Assessments

The measurement books are a form of formative assessment.
