Lesson Progression
- Teacher will go over words/symbols (i.e., <, =, >) and what they mean.
- Teacher will play video for students and sing along! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Efzu2slaI
- Teacher will go over examples of how to use the words/symbols (i.e., <, =, >) as a class and ask students to create the symbols with their fingers on the examples they do together.
- Once teacher reviews examples, students will be split into small groups to practice more. They will be given number cards with numbers 1-10 on them and popsicle sticks. They will use the popsicle sticks to create the symbols for less than, greater than, or equal to. Teacher will walk around and observe the students while they are working to make sure they are taking part in the activity correctly, and see their progress.
- Teacher will allow students to work in their centers for about 15 minutes. After the activity, the students will come together and the teacher will review what they learned and play the video again for the students to sing along.
Teacher Notes
Differentiation: Pull for small group remediation as necessary. If comparing numbers from a range of 1-10 is too much in the beginning, focus on numbers one off from each other. Ex. 4 < 5, then using relative knowledge of counting fluently to move into the full range.
Extension: Increase values to go up to 20.
