Lesson Progression
Day 1 (you may need more days depending on if students create the items they will sell): Students will begin to create an item to “sell”. If you would like, you can give students different items you have already created such as homework passes, or other classroom-type rewards. Students may also create different items to sell at home. Pinterest is a great website to look for child-friendly crafts.
Day 2: Have students review multi-digit subtraction and money. You can review whole group or pull small groups.
Day 3: Students will interact with the “counting back change” module. This will allow students to become more comfortable with making change and dealing with money. You may choose which assignments to give students.
Day 4: Have half of your students “buy” goods. Give them a certain amount to spend. This can change depending on how you price the goods. For example, students have $100 to spend. They will keep a document that shows how much money they have left to spend. They will subtract the amount they spend each time they buy an item. They have to make sure they do not spend more money than they have! A recording document is found under the resource tab. The students that are selling the items will also complete the subtraction to make sure they both get the same answer.
Day 5: The second group of students will complete the activity.
Teacher Notes
Extend: Find a website, such as Target or Walmart and let students “buy” off of the online website.
Differentiate: Give students set prices for items. Begin with single-step problems prior to moving to multi-step problems.
