Lesson Progression

  1. Create a KWL Chart on Martin Luther King Jr. Have students think about what they already know and what they would like to know.
  2. Read the story ‘Martins Big Words: The Life of Martin Luther King Jr.’. After reading the story, refer back to the KWL Chart. Students will share what they learned about MLK from the story. Add this new information to the KWL Chart.
  3. Share the Kid President Video on Martin Luther King Jr. with students. After the video, discuss words that could be used to describe MLK. Create a chart with students.
  4. Have students create a writing assignment on Martin Luther King Jr. Questions students can think about before writing are…
  • If I were to have met MLK I would have asked him…?
  • I would tell him…?
  • I would thank him…?
  • I would show him…?

These are ideas for students, but if students come up with their own idea they are more than welcome to use it! They should include some form of drawing to go along with their writing sample.

  1. Have students share their writing pieces and then put them on display for others to see and enjoy!
  2. Go back to the KWL Chart and continue filling in the "what I learned section" with student responses if applicable.
