Lesson Progression

  1. Good morning class! Today we are going to be working on our multiplication skills.
  2. Teacher will call out basic multiplication facts (using numbers 1-10) and have students answer.
  3. Teacher will go over how to write a number sentence, draw a picture to help solve the problem, and how to write repeated addition.
  4. After going over these three things as a class. The teacher will write a few problems on the board and have the students work them out on paper at their seats. Students will come up and show their work on the board, and then the teacher will go over the problem together.
  5. After doing a few problems together, the students will break into small groups and be handed multiplication cards, and cubes. The students will need to show the multiplication problem written on the card to help them find the answer. For example, if one of the cards says 3x10, the students should show using the blocks ten groups of 3. From this, they should count the blocks they have total, in order to find the answer. (Students should work in small groups for 20-25 minutes).
  6. After the students have worked in their small groups, the teacher will send them back to their desks and they will be given a worksheet to complete.  (Students should work on worksheet for 15-20 minutes).
  7. Once the students have had a chance to work on the worksheet, the teacher will go over the worksheet as a class, and answer any questions the students may have.

Teacher Notes

Differentiation: Focus in on one problem in particular in a small group. Help model a think aloud of how to show the parts of the problem one by one in the worksheet (located in the resources tab).

Extension: Give students word problem scenarios in which they must extract the data to record the one problem many ways worksheet. Alternatively, you can have students create their own word problems/scenarios and have them complete the one problem, many ways on theirs as well.

Assessments

The students will be assessed on how well they are able to take part in the small group activity through the teacher’s observation. The students will also be assessed on how well they complete the multiplication worksheet.
