Lesson Progression

  • Bring students to the carpet.
  • Show a bunch of data on the board. Ask them “what is the least amount shown?” “What is the greatest value shown?” and “What is the mode of the data?”
  • Listen to student answers. Ask them if it was difficult to sort through the data.
  • Have students brainstorm ideas about ways to organize the data.
  • See if students remember line plots.
  • If they do build on this, if not, play the review video. (found in resources)
  • Once students have watched the video, have them complete the PBS interactive lesson for building a line plot.
  • Students will then complete the line plot creator interactive slide for independent practice. Students will share this with you so you can check for understanding.

Teacher Notes

differentiation: Instead of overwhelming them with large datasets on the board, start with smaller sets of data points that are easier to sort and analyze. This allows them to grasp the concepts without feeling overloaded.

extension: Challenge them to analyze the data using spreadsheet functions to calculate measures like mean, median, and standard deviation. Guide them to identify potential outliers in the data and explore possible reasons for these outliers. They can create visualizations like box plots to highlight these outliers.

Assessments

Check independent practice for a quick assessment.
