Let’s Go Careers Charles River

Students will watch Let’s Go Career Videos on Charles River and learn about the roles of quality operations, vice president, and instrument production supervisor.  The students will learn about what Charles River manufactures and their role in pharmaceuticals and public health. The students will create a presentation on the roles discussed in the videos and their significance for Charles River.

Lesson Progression

  1. Bellringer - Students will visit the Charles River Laboratories website at https://www.criver.com/. They will complete the learning activity ”Charles River Learning Activity” (found in the resources tab) to learn about what Charle River does and some of the many careers available.  This can be done digitally, printed, or whole-group and writing their responses on large chart paper. The students will share their answers by both submitting their responses digitally and orally.  The teacher will review the answers with the students and make sure they understand what Charles River does and the types of careers available.
  2. The teacher will introduce the next activity by reading the overview of the video,  “Foster Jordan, Vice President | Let's Go! CAREERS”  located https://www.knowitall.org/video/foster-jordan-vice-president-lets-go-careers. The teacher will share the document, “Foster Jordan, Vice President Learning Activity” (located in the Resources tab) with the students (this can be done digitally or printed). The teacher will review the activity so the students know what to expect when watching the video. The students will complete that activity and submit to the teacher. The teacher will use “Foster Jordan, Vice President Learning Activity Answer Key” (located in the Resources Tab) to check for understanding and provide feedback to the students. The teacher should discuss the answers and video with the class.
  3. The teacher will introduce the next activity by telling the students that this will focus on quality operations at Charles River. The teacher will introduce the next activity by reading the overview of the video,  “Nora Blair, Quality Operations Manager | Let's Go! CAREERS” located https://www.knowitall.org/video/nora-blair-quality-operations-manager-lets-go-careers. The teacher will share the document, “Nora Blair, Quality Operations Manager Learning Activity” (located in the Resources tab) with the students (this can be done digitally or printed). The teacher will review the activity so the students know what to expect when watching the video. The students will complete that activity and submit to the teacher. The teacher will use “Nora Blair, Quality Operations ManagerLearning Activity Answer Key” (located in the Resources Tab) to check for understanding and provide feedback to the students. The teacher should discuss the answers and video with the class.
  4. The teacher will introduce the next activity by telling the students that this will focus on instrument production at Charles River. The teacher will introduce the next activity by reading the overview of the video,  “Torrance West, Instrument Production Supervisor | Let's Go! CAREERS located https://www.knowitall.org/video/torrance-west-instrument-production-supervisor-lets-go-careers.  The teacher will share the document, “Torrance West, Instrument Production Supervisor Learning Activity” (located in the Resources tab) with the students (this can be done digitally or printed). The teacher will review the activity so the students know what to expect when watching the video. The students will complete that activity and submit to the teacher. The teacher will use “Torrance West, Instrument Production Supervisor  Learning Activity Answer Key” (located in the Resources Tab) to check for understanding and provide feedback to the students. The teacher should discuss the answers and video with the class.
  5. Culminating Activity - Students will complete a presentation or essay summarizing how the role of a vice president, quality operations manager and instrument production supervisor contributes to the overall operations of Charles River Laboratories. The students can use Powerpoint or Google Slides to create the presentation. They must cite the Knowitall videos and Charles River’s website in their presentation. The teacher will share the document “Charles River Presentation” with the students so they understand the expectations of the presentation (located in the Assessments Tab). The teacher will use “Charles River Presentation Teacher’s Edition” to assess the students’ knowledge and to provide feedback to the students.  (located in the Assessment Tab)   

Teacher Notes

If you are using a cloud file storage system (Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or iCloud), I would recommend having the students create a digital folder for this lesson to save their notes and student work. It will help with organization.
