Students will learn about interjections and how to use them in their writing.

Lesson Progression
1. Bring students to carpet and have them face their attention to the Smart Board.
2. Ask students questions such as:
-What things do you say when you are excited?
Oh my!
-What is something you say when you hit your nail with a hammer?
Ouch! What the heck!
-What do you say when you are shocked?
Oh my goodness!
3. Discuss with students what these type of statements are and what they look like in our writing.
4. Play video on youtube: Interjection Schoolhouse Rock
5. Explain to students why we use interjections in our writing:
Interjections are used by authors to add an element of realism to their stories, as humans often use interjections heavily within their everyday speech. Interjections are often followed by an exclamation - showing excitement or importance to whatever is being said.
6. Send students back to seats to begin activity.
7. Fold printer paper into 4 slips. (comic strips)
8. Have students create their own comic strip using as many interjections as possible.
9. Students must create multiple scenes using multiple different interjections.
10. Have them share with a partner.
11. Switch with partner and take out or "white out" (use sticky notes, etc.) and insert new interjections.
12. Have students share with class, if desired.
