Inside a Seed
Students will learn what happens after pollination occurs: seeds are made! Students will examine seeds and learn how they become adult plants.
Lesson Created By: Savannah River Ecology Lab
Essential Question

Recommended Technology:
Other Instructional Materials or Notes:
- Seeds, dry and wet
- Paper towels
- Plastic bags
- Soil
- Dissection tools
Lesson Progression
- Talk to students about seeds. Ask them what seeds are and what they do.
- Have students draw what they think is on the inside of a seed.
- After students have drawn their pictures, pass out dry and wet seeds.
- Ask students what they think seeds need in order to grow?
- Have students dissect the wet seeds. They should record/ draw these new findings.
- Talk to students about germination
- Show students how to make their own zip lock greenhouses or newspaper pots to plant their germinated seeds in.
Teacher Notes
Plants, like humans, have to start somewhere. Plants start out as seeds that will germinate and grow. But have you ever thought about what is inside the seed? We know plants come out when conditions are right, but what exactly is happening? Seeds are simply an embryo wrapped in a protective case, filled with all the nutrients the growing plant will need. The seed is activated to germinate when it receives lots of water. From there the embryo will use up the nutrients and begin to grow. When it’s ready, it will pop out of its case and start to grow up.
