Complete the following activities and answer the following questions
1. On a map locate Charleston, SC and the Caribbean Island of Barbados. Calculate the distance between the two locations.
2. What year did the first group of planters set sail from Barbados to Albemarle Point?
3. (Textbook question) Where, in relation to modern day Charleston, is Albemarle Point located?
4. (Textbook question) Give at least two reasons that would explain why the original settlement was moved from Albemarle Point to Oyster Point.
5. The article states that the Barbadians brought the plantation system to SC. What does this mean, and how did this system shape SC’s economic foundation?
6.. How many of SC’s first governors were Barbadian or had Barbadian ties?
7. Give three distinct elements, brought from Barbados, that are still visible in Charleston today.
Complete one of the following activities.
1. Research Charleston single houses. Pretend you are an architect who is being interviewed to possibly design a Charleston home for a wealthy planter. This home would be their “town” house. Why should this planter choose you to design their home? Write a persuasive letter that would convince your future employer that you would be the perfect architect to design their home and a single house would be the perfect house to build both economically and in terms of Charleston’s climate. Draw the plans and be prepared to share your plans with your teacher or your peers.
2. Design a poster for the SC National Heritage Corridor that highlights the connection between Barbados and Charleston. Your poster must show the Barbadian influence in SC’s culture.
3. Design an advertisement to entice individuals from Barbados to settle in Albemarle Point. Include topics like land features, advantages to the migration, support from the British monarchy, and natives inhabiting the Carolina colony. Use current advertisements to help with your design, but remember your target audience would be British subjects living in Barbados in the late 1600’s.
