Hip Hop Science Matter Lesson Plan

In this lesson, students will identify and describe the characteristics of the 3 states of matter and describe the 6 phase changes of matter using repetitious melodic chants (Raps), concept mapping, Graphic Organizers and a lab demonstration.

Lesson Progression

Verse 1

A Solid has a definite Shape and a Definite Volume

And the gas is da opposite it has nothing at all

And a Liquid has a Volume thats Definite and its gonna take shape in what eva you put it in.

Verse 2

Solid to a liquid is melting

A Liquid to a solid is freezing

A liquid to a gas is evaporation

A Gas to a liquid is condensation

A Solid to gas is sublimation

A gas to a solid is deposition

Lab Demonstration: (Wear Safety Googles, Do not touch Dry Ice with your bare hands)

Place room temperature water inside a beaker and drop a piece of dry ice into the water and have students identify the states of matter and the phase changes that they observe.

Physical Science: Matter and Mixtures
- 5.P.2 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the physical properties of matter and mixtures.
  - 5.P.2A Matter is made up of particles that are too small to be seen. Even though the particles are very small, the movement and spacing of these particles determines the basic properties of matter.
    - 5.P.2A.1 Analyze and interpret data from observations and measurements of the physical properties of matter (including volume, shape, movement, and spacing of particles) to explain why matter can be classified as a solid, liquid or gas.

Assessments

Have students Perform Rap Song and create a music video using available technology (Chromebook, IPads etc.).
