Lesson Progression

Advanced students could play this game with a partner, however, it is a great 1:1 or small reading group tool to help your students who need work with reading comprehension.

1. The teacher will begin this small group lesson by showing students the cover of the book they’ll be reading.
2. Next, the teacher will tell students to make guesses about where the setting is, as he/she reads the clues.
3. The teacher will read the first clue. This is an adjective to describe the setting the students are guessing. For example water (setting is the beach)
4 The clues will gradually reveal the setting the more you read. The goal is to get students to put the clues together and make logical guesses before getting to an obvious clue.
5. Once students guess the setting, the teacher can repeat the process or begin reading the book for their small group. The guessing game should relate to the story they are about to read to engage them, and to encourage them to make guesses as they read the story.
