Good Character Traits

1. The teacher will begin the lesson with a PowerPoint to introduce the topic.
2. After the PowerPoint, the teacher will read the story, ‘Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon’ by Patty Lovell.    - During the read-aloud, students will think about how the characters demonstrate honesty, respect for themselves and others, dependability, and responsibility. They can draw pictures, or write down things to help them remember their thoughts.
3. After the read-aloud, the teacher will review parts from the story with students where these character traits were presented.
4. The teacher will then place students in groups to discuss their thoughts.

• Each group will be creative in coming up with a way to present the information they discussed. They will have the option of poster board, song/dance, ‘frozen picture’, etc.
• All character traits must be represented from the story. (students should be given 15-20 minutes to do this.)
• Each group will present it to the class.

5. After each group has presented, the teacher will review the importance of having these good character traits.

The students will be assessed on the group presentations, and whether they were able to demonstrate their understanding of the character traits that were taught. They will also be assessed through the questioning that takes place during the lesson.
