Essential Question
How can we use attributes to categorize shapes?
Lesson Progression
Preparation
-Students will have complete leadership and participation during this lesson.
-Students will be split into groups of three or four students.
-Each group will have a teacher, a detective, and one or two students to give feedback.
-Each group will receive a tub of laminated shapes including a square, rectangle, triangle, circle, pentagon, hexagon, septagon, and octagon. For second grade, 2-D and 3-D shapes can be included.
Progression (Duration: 20 minutes)
1. Students will begin by picking their beginning roles
2. The “teacher” will choose a clue card from assortment given to them by the teacher
3. The detective will listen to the clues, and then choose a shape from the tub, that he/she infers matches the characteristics from the card.
4. Students in the group who are not the “teacher” or the “detective” will be the “students”. The student(s) in the groups will be giving a thumbs up (yes, I agree this is the shape) or a thumbs down (no, I do not agree this is the correct shape) based on the clues given.
5. The students will rotate their roles after each clue card is read to the group.
6. Students will continue the game until there are no more clue cards or shapes.
Teacher Notes
Differentiation: For students who need extra help: Allow more than one detective to encourage collaboration and discussion before revealing the final answer.
Exension: For students who need to be challenged: Insert 3-D shapes and cards that describe multiple shapes (ex: quadrilaterals)

Assessments
Play the game whole group where the teacher will act as “the teacher”.
The teacher will read clue cards and draw names to be the detectives. The teacher can take anecdotal notes or complete a checklist.
