Lesson Progression
The teacher will pass out the snack mix. It does not matter how much of each item you give them. Students will have different amounts. You may choose which items you want to add to the snack mix. A recording sheet is provided under the resources tab.
Students will write the fractions for each item. Ex.) 7/67 for cereal, 8/67 for M&Ms, etc.
They will then draw a model to represent each item of the whole snack mix.
Finally, they will add all the fractions to make sure they have the "whole". Their numerators and denominators should be equal.
Teacher Notes
Differentiation: Pull small groups as necessary. Go back to adding and subtracting fractions (not mixed numbers) with like denominators.
Extension: You may change the snack mix document. If you would like to extend students, they could change the fractions into decimals, and turn the decimals into percents of the whole.
